Single Review : Segrëgates “No Rhyme or Reason”
At first, I
started listening to “No Rhyme or Reason” before watching the video, and for a
moment I genuinely wondered if Motörhead had unearthed a previously unreleased
track and given it a fresh remaster. Then I watched the video—and was
pleasantly surprised. Segrëgates may not be Motörhead, but they certainly know
how to channel that unmistakable Motorpunk spirit.
Interestingly,
it is the bassist who visually recalls Lemmy, while vocalist Smell sounds
remarkably close to him. Even the microphone position, held high in classic
Lemmy fashion, adds to the uncanny resemblance. But comparisons aside, the song
itself deserves attention. “No Rhyme or Reason” is punchy, catchy and built to
make you bang your head, driven by a fast, energetic drum performance, a
relentlessly infectious riff and a raw vocal delivery that could fool you into
thinking Lemmy had stepped back behind the microphone.
The
production is equally effective: loud, gritty and suitably old-school without
unnecessary modern polish. Even the Motörhead-inspired logo is clearly part of
the aesthetic.
Segrëgates
are not a tribute band, and I admire them for owning their influences rather
than hiding them. “No Rhyme or Reason” is unapologetic, rebellious rock ’n’
roll that puts authenticity before trends—and that attitude makes it all the
more enjoyable.
