Review : 9 O’Clock Nasty “Beast”
Leicester’s
unruly punk trio 9 O’Clock Nasty have built their reputation on chaos,
attitude, and razor-sharp wit. With their new single “Beast” taken from
the upcoming album Chaos, the band shows a more reflective sidewithout
sacrificing the grit that defines their sound.
“Beast”
opens in unexpectedly restrained territory. A melancholic piano line sets the
tone, creating a slow-burn atmosphere that feels almost intimate. It’s a moment
of vulnerability rarely explored so openly in the band’s catalogue, hinting at
themes of regret, emotional damage, and the messy reality of human connection.
The track feels contemplative at first, as if the band is taking a breath
before unleashing the storm.
But this is
still 9 O’Clock Nasty, and the calm doesn’t last forever. As the drums
crash in, the song begins to mutate. The mood grows darker and more
psychedelic, and the band’s trademark bite slowly resurfaces. The vocals carry
a raw, imperfect honesty that fits the song’s themes perfectly—love, mistakes,
and the uncomfortable truth that sometimes we become the “beast” in our own
stories.
Musically,
the track balances melody with grit. The rhythm section eventually injects a
gritty pulse, while the vocals shift between reflective murmurs and snarling
intensity. It’s a clever dynamic: beauty colliding with abrasion.
“Beast”
stands out as one of the more emotionally layered pieces from Chaos. It
proves the band can explore deeper, more introspective territory while still
sounding unmistakably like themselves. Melodic, strange, and quietly feral, the
single shows that even when 9 O’Clock Nasty slow things down, there’s
still something dangerous lurking beneath the surface.
