This interview explores the creative rebirth behind Akantophis new album Erneuerung, discussing evolving songwriting, deep friendships, studio experiences, and the band’s balance between classic Black Metal roots and modern influences.
1. “Erneuerung”
marks a new chapter for Akantophis. What does the title represent for the band
at this stage of your journey?
In a
way, the title speaks for itself. It not only marks the first album with the
four-piece line-up, but also represents conscious decisions that we make
together and implement together. There is a great deal of trust between us, and
we are aware of each individual's abilities and dedication. In a sense, it is
also the result of our long-standing friendship, which influences the entire
creative process and is reflected in the form of an album. Development also
means transformation – like a snake shedding its skin.
2. The
album blends atmospheric intensity with raw aggression. How did you approach
balancing these elements while staying true to your Black Metal roots?
We ‘grew up’ musically in the 90s. Many bands from the early 90s influenced us
and we still feel connected to them. At the same time, we are open to new
influences – even beyond metal. Exploring church modes also played a role in
the creation of our music. The combination of these different influences brings
the result.
3.
Compared to your earlier releases like “Galaria: Terra@Exitus” and
the 7-inch “Wiederkehr”, how has your songwriting evolved on this
record?
We are gradually getting better at bringing out the best in each of us and our
abilities, or at least we are now more successful in doing so. We always tried
to approach things in a very emotional and intense way. Of course, our
experiences from other projects also contributed to our further development. We
also feel that we have matured both personally and technically...
4. The
album was recorded live at Liquid Aether Studio near Cologne under the
direction of Mario Dahmen. How did this recording process shape the organic and
dynamic feel of the album?
We are very grateful for the time spent in the studio and were all there the
whole time. Everyone had the opportunity to contribute and drive the process
forward at every stage of the recording. Various ideas only emerged during the
creative exchange in the studio. Mario let us give free rein to our creativity
and provided helpful impetus for implementation. The fact that we were able to
rehearse together also had an impact on the recording process and the approach
to playing live.
5. Your
lyrics are primarily in German and show more variation than before. What themes
dominate Erneuerung, and how important is language in expressing
them?
Language is extremely important to us for conveying feelings and emotions. Our
native language usually offers us the most appropriate means of expression and
implementation. However, every now and then, English seems more appropriate for
the expression or character of the song. This also comes about during the
creative process in the rehearsal room. Sadly, a good friend and founding
member of the band did not wake up from a coma during the preparations for the
album. This was the inspiration for the lyrics in ‘see me’.
6. After
your hiatus in 2004 and reunion in 2017, how has the band’s internal dynamic
changed? Did this renewed chemistry influence the creative process of this
album?
Definitely; we have known each other for over thirty years now, have maintained
our friendship and even deepened it. In addition, you inevitably mature as a
person and we are definitely more focused in what we do.
7.
Tracks like “Lobotomie” and “Horizont aus Glas” suggest intense conceptual
imagery. Can you tell us more about the inspiration behind some of the standout
tracks?
Basically, since the band was founded and our first album Galaria: Terra@
Exitus was released, we have been moved by the depths of humanity. At the time,
the album title was, in a sense, also indicative of our direction, partly
because of the way it was written. ‘Ego above all else – above life and death’
seems to be a brief description of many citizens of the world. Our lyrics
accompany individual sequences on the journey through this species. We also
feel that the way certain actions are dealt with and the reasons behind them
are worth mentioning.
8. With
influences such as Deathspell Omega, Ved Buens Ende, and Bethlehem, how do you
incorporate avant-garde or dissonant elements into your sound without losing
cohesion?
The rhythm and tempo (rather old school) form the down-to-earth backbone of our
music. The harmonies bring in modern aspects and other influences. This allows
us to preserve the old spirit while still providing new impetus.
9.
“EXITUS XX” closed a chapter on your earlier material. In what ways does Erneuerung consciously
distance itself from the past?
With the introduction of newer material (e.g. Lobotomy), we realised that we
had developed further and wanted to make room for newer influences in the
future. However, with Exitus XX, we wanted to bring the old material to a
‘dignified conclusion’ in a slightly more modern guise.
10. Now
that the album is out (April 14, 2025), what are your expectations? Are there
plans for live performances or further expansion of Akantophis’ sonic
direction?
With this
album, we wanted to increase our reach and expand our audience – we are very
grateful for the many responses and reviews we have received so far.
Our focus
is currently on writing new material. We want to use the energy and flow for
another album. Arrangements have already been made regarding studio time, etc.
So stay tuned.
