Single Review : xIron Sharpens Ironx - Grasping Straws
West
Michigan’s xIron Sharpens Ironx deliver a sonic sledgehammer with their single
“Grasping Straws.” From the opening seconds, the track hits with relentless
force—ultra-heavy, rhythm-driven hardcore with a raw energy that instantly
evokes the gritty 90s New York scene. The vocals come in with a ferocity
reminiscent of bands like Madball or Blood For Blood, backed by gang-style
shouts that amplify the aggression.
The track evolves quickly. A second, catchier riff kicks in, channeling the brutal groove of Dying Fetus, instantly inducing involuntary headbanging. Just as you settle in, the band flips the switch again—dropping into a technically complex riff section full of odd rhythms and sharp transitions. The fusion of hardcore vocals over intricate metal riffs is both unexpected and refreshing.
Midway
through, a crushing groove hits hard, followed by chaotic blast beats that
border on deathgrind intensity. The band then circles back to their hardcore
roots with a final burst of rhythm-heavy, spoken-word style breakdowns and a
punishing finale.
“Grasping
Straws” is a bold, genre-defying statement. xIron Sharpens Ironx aren't just
grasping—they're gripping something truly original.
