Single Review: Savagegroup “An Angel Had to Go Home”
Having
previously reviewed Savagegroup’s “Paradise Lost,” I was curious to hear where
the German trio would take things next. “An Angel Had to Go Home” doesn’t
radically depart from the formula established by its predecessor, but it once
again demonstrates the band’s clear love for old-school melodic Heavy Metal.
The track
is built around energetic riffs, driving drums, melodic guitar work and an
unmistakable 90s Metal atmosphere. The production also follows the direction of
the previous single: it is not excessively polished, leaving just enough
rawness to preserve a handmade, authentic character while still giving the
arrangement plenty of weight.
There are some nice details throughout the song, particularly the additional female vocals, which add another layer to the melodic and emotional side of the track. The atmospheric intro sets the mood before the Metal machinery kicks in, while the closing section moves toward a more classical, delicate feeling with orchestral textures and acoustic guitar arpeggios.
There are
no huge surprises here, but Savagegroup knows exactly what they want to do, and
they do it well. “An Angel Had to Go Home” is another solid piece of melodic
old-school Metal that should appeal to listeners who miss the spirit of the
90s.
Keep going, guys!
