Emerging from the shadows of Exowst Scotland, this interview explores the project’s dark creativity, spontaneous artistry, and genre-defying soundscapes shaped by improvisation, mystery, and Scotland’s atmospheric spirit.
1. Exowst
Scotland combines avant-garde metal, ambient music, orchestral textures, and
even dance influences into a unique sonic experience. How did the project first
come together, and what was your original artistic vision?
When I
started Exowst Scotland, the only thing I was 100% certain about, was that I
had to get some music and emotions out of myself. I didn't have a preconceived
idea of what the music was going to come out like, but I knew it had a very
dark side to it.
2. The
titles of your tracks being represented only by numbers adds a strong sense of
mystery. What inspired this concept, and how important is listener
interpretation to the Exowst Scotland experience?
As with all
music, you can listen to it on many levels. The number idea started because of
Bastille Day in France, hence 1789.
3. Snow,
you are known for your background in baroque and classical music. How does that
musical foundation shape the compositions and atmosphere within Exowst
Scotland?
I can't
escape myself and having trained and performed as a "classical"
musician for years, that side is always there I guess. However, what I'm trying
to do is create something unique, so I don't try to add anything by design. It
just happens. Or not!
The rewards
are that it sounds more like music and less like maths or a technical
experiment. The challenges are several, but I try to embrace them as part of
the beauty.
5. Exowst
Scotland’s music feels designed to create an altered state of consciousness for
the listener. What emotions, thoughts, or experiences are you hoping people
discover while listening?
As I
previously said, none of this music is designed. It's more an outpouring of
what is inside me. I hope people like my music, but I make it for myself. If
something tickles or grabs the listener then that is a result.
6. Releasing
a new track every month between 2022 and 2024 is an impressive creative
achievement. What did that intense period of productivity teach you as an
artist?
Yes, 36
tracks, one every month was an interesting experience. I actually really
enjoyed creating a template that I had to stick to no matter what. It forced
me, in a way, to bring more discipline into my outpouring of my madness.
I simply
use my ears and judgement. Sometimes it works perfectly, other times...
8. Compared
to the monthly releases of previous years, 2025 and 2026 have featured fewer
but longer and more expansive works. Has your creative approach evolved in a
different direction recently?
2025 was a difficult year for me on a personal level, so I felt I needed a break, plus I had other new projects to finish. 202513 was the only track in 2025, but although I've only released one track in 2026 so far, more are coming. My juices are starting to flow and this means trouble...in a good way.
9. Edinburgh
has a rich artistic and musical history. Has the city or Scotland itself
influenced the mood and identity of Exowst Scotland in any way?
Yes, of
course. Exowst Scotland has Scotland in there for a reason. I've lived in
Edinburgh since I was very young, so the city vibe is in me and Scotland as a
country, particularly the nature, I find endlessly inspiring. Plus Haggis,
Lorne sausage, Tattie Scones and Irn Bru of course!
10. With
more releases planned for 2026, what can listeners expect from the future of
Exowst Scotland, and are there any new musical territories you are eager to
explore?
This first
track of 2026 is extremely dark and pretty heavy duty and I expect things to be
different, but along the same lines. There will be more up-tempo tracks with
drums and more heavy crushing guitars, but probably as in previous years, with
some more surprising elements. I can't say what they will be yet, but I am
exited to see what my brain produces in the coming months. In 2027. I might go
back to releasing a track every month. We will see.
