EP Review : No Clue “Torch”
With Torch,
Swedish band No Clue deliver a fierce and compact nu-metal statement that burns
bright across its 17 minutes and 31 seconds. This five-track EP captures a band
fully in control of its identity, blending classic nu-metal aggression with
heavy metal muscle and a distinctly Scandinavian sense of melody.
The EP
opens with the title track “Torch,” which immediately sets the tone. A
devastating main riff and breathtaking guitar solos announce the band’s intent,
before a brief calm passage highlights the vocalist’s strong, expressive voice perfectly
suited to the band’s sound. Midway through the song, No Clue showcase their
technical skill, underlining the high level of musicianship that runs
throughout the EP.
“Black
Water” follows with
a clean guitar intro that evokes 90s grunge, before shifting into a groovy
nu-metal riff. The track becomes increasingly melodic, proving that No Clue
know exactly how and where to express themselves. It’s a song where the band
clearly stamps its mark, balancing heaviness and atmosphere with confidence.
The third track, “Raise Your Horns,” is pure headbanging fuel from the very first notes. A fast solo leads into a speed-heavy riff reminiscent of great Swedish heavy metal bands of the 90s. What stands out here is the band’s refusal to box themselves into nu-metal alone; they confidently draw from multiple metal traditions without losing cohesion.
“Fractured
Faith” slows things
down slightly, delivering a heavy yet melodic track with a pronounced nu-metal
edge. Everything feels measured and classy, especially the breakdown where the
vocalist boldly employs fry screams and false chord techniques, impressive and
well executed.
The EP
closes with “Rise Like Fire,” an anthemic finale built on Scandinavian
melodies and a memorable melodic chorus that lingers long after the song ends.
It feels like a mission statement for the band.
In summary, Torch is an excellent EP, combining refined heaviness with tasteful nu-metal elements. The level is high across composition, performance, and execution! No Clue are undeniably a band to watch closely.
