Single Review: Flowers for Juno “My Bloody Kisses”
With My
Bloody Kisses, Flowers for Juno carve out their unique space where gothic
melancholy meets lush shoegaze textures. This single, accompanied by the B-side
Pink Noise, is the band’s first release since Morgue Than Words
and once again showcases Benjó James’ skills as a multi-instrumentalist,
producer, and composer. Every aspect of the track, from writing to mastering,
is handled by James, giving the song an intimate and cohesive atmosphere.
At first, I
thought this was a cover of the legendary band Type O Negative with the iconic
Peter Steele, who passed away over a decade ago—but it was not. I say this
because the artwork immediately reminded me of their famous Bloody Kisses.
After the first few seconds, I realized I wasn’t wrong: this single transported
me back about twenty years to the era of October Rust by Type O
Negative. It was in that moment I made the connection—Type O Negative also has
elements of shoegaze, something I wouldn’t have associated without hearing this
track.
Musically, My
Bloody Kisses opens with a swinging, shadowy rhythm that immediately sets
the tone. Layered guitars drenched in delay and reverb create a nostalgic,
immersive haze, while James’ deep, resonant vocals evoke the spirit of Peter
Steele without feeling imitative. The track is concise for shoegaze at just
under five minutes, fairly linear, but masterfully conveys its mood and
atmosphere.
Overall, My
Bloody Kisses is a strong, atmospheric release that demonstrates Flowers
for Juno’s mastery of gothic shoegaze. Well done.
