Rage Unfold unleash their debut single “My Division”—a hard-hitting mix of heavy metal energy and progressive depth, exploring inner battles, resilience, and a vision to inspire through music.
1. “My Division” deals with the theme of an
internal battle. Can you share what personal experiences or inspirations shaped
the lyrics?
Our vision as a band stands for reflecting real life experiences. Our lyrics tend to be quite deep and emotional. We believe that every individual has to face certain obstacles in life that need to be overcome. We believe that our songs could help the listeners cope with these hard moments.
2. The single combines hard rock energy with progressive elements. How do you
balance complexity in time signatures and scales while keeping the song catchy
and melodic?
It literally came naturally. I have just followed the groove and the melody in my head and managed to compose the song successfully. I think it has that necessary balance between complexity and melody, which is crucial in metal music.
3. Bozhidar, Marie-Louise, and Siegfried each played a distinct role in
creating this track. How did the collaboration between the three of you unfold
during the writing process?
Marie-Louise is the lyricist. She sends me lyrics, and then I tend to choose the one that catches my attention. After that I start composing the melody and when I’m done with the structure of the song, I forward it to Siggi, who always manages to deliver powerful vocals for our tracks.
4. Your influences include Iron Maiden, Metallica, Manowar, and Messenger. How
do you channel those inspirations without losing your unique voice as Rage
Unfold?
These bands are just an inspiration; they are not part of our vision as a virtual band. So, for us is not a problem to be unique when we start composing.
5. What message do you hope listeners will take away from “My Division” when
they hear it for the first time?
I hope that they’ll release that sing song is quite intriguing, because of the different rhythmic patterns of its structure. Also, the lyrics are very deep and strong and they will help the listener to overcome certain difficult moments in life.
6. Could you walk us through the recording process in Bulgaria? Were there any
challenges or breakthroughs that defined the studio sessions?
The whole song was recorded by me ( Bozhidar Popov ), except for the vocals. They were recorded in Germany. Thanks to the great technology nowadays, such recording sessions have become much more convenient for us, musicians. The whole process was quite smooth!
7. Progressive elements often make songs appealing to musicians and theorists. Was it your intention to create something that appeals both technically and emotionally?
Yes, that was my main goal with this song. Our previous releases were not that technical, so I decided to change the direction a bit. In this way we managed to create something more compelling for a broader audience.
8. You’ve mentioned that the song is “a music theorist’s dream.” Can you give
us a specific example of a section where you experimented with unusual
structures or rhythmic changes?
That was a quote from a recent review of our single! The thing is that the time signatures change during the whole song, which makes it very interesting. Moreover, I have used different scales too!
9. For a debut release, “My Division” is ambitious and multi-layered. Did you
ever worry it might be “too complex” for first-time listeners, or was that part
of your vision from the start?
That was my plan. Sometimes being "too complicated" sets you apart from the masses. I hope this will work for us!
10. How does this single set the stage for Rage Unfold’s future direction?
Should fans expect more hard rock/prog hybrids, or are you planning to explore
other sounds?
We are originally a heavy metal band, so I don’t plan to make a big turn when it comes down to our musical direction. For now we’ll stick to the good old traditional heavy metal, but we’ll also add modern elements in our songs!
11. Since there are currently no live performances planned, do you see
yourselves taking this song to the stage in the near future? How would you
envision it translating to a live setting?
Definitely yes! My main goal is to transform the band from a virtual to a real one. This will happen with time, bit by bit. My dream is to play these songs live on stage!
12. Looking ahead, what’s next for Rage Unfold after “My Division”—are there
plans for an EP, a full-length album, or more singles in the pipeline?
For now, we’ll stick to the singles as we’re a virtual band. Our next release will be towards the end of this year, or in the beginning of the new one. Stay tuned and follow us on our social platforms!
