Finnish metal force Tomi (Magnadur) fuses Shakespearean drama with brutal melodic metal on Punishment of Hamlet. We discuss his inspirations, vocal evolution, and what’s next for this unstoppable solo project.
1. Tomi,
congratulations on the release of Punishment of Hamlet! What
inspired you to bring Shakespeare’s stories into the world of brutal melodic
metal?
Thanks very
much it’s my dream come true and my passion to make just a strong themes and powerful
lyrics and I like the historic the Shakespeare has done I hope it shows from
the album!
2. Your
vocal performance on this album has been described as next-level. How did you
approach your vocals differently for Punishment of Hamlet compared
to your earlier work?
Vocal practicing
has gone Professional level,6-7 times per week every week no matter what. The
dedication has developed to gain very much power and technique to vocals and
you can hear that on upcoming album.
3. Magnadur
has been incredibly productive this year, with Lord of Chaos, Xtabay,
and multiple singles already out. How do you maintain such a high creative
output?
It’s my
passion and i am on creative mode at this moment and love to develop to be
better all the time.
4. Let’s
talk about the single “Sad Trip,” released just before Punishment of
Hamlet. What’s the story behind that track, and how does it fit into the
overall theme of your recent material?
Actually, ‘sad
eyes’ was released few months ago and ‘Sad trip’ was last year, they tell
stories from real life all.
My latest
single before new upcoming album was resident evil.
5. You
mentioned that Punishment of Hamlet tells many stories from
Shakespeare’s works. Can you walk us through which plays or characters inspired
the songs on the album?
Yes, I went
deep into Shakespeare on the new album and mainly to Hamlet and different parts
of it and the dramatic power is heard on the songs!
6. How
has the response been from fans and media around the world? Did you expect such
a global reaction to your solo project?
I didn’t
know it was this big, but i do lot of work to get better songs and interesting
lyrics and i thing this is only start!
7. Magnadur
is a solo project, but you’ve recently put together a full band. How has
working with other musicians changed the way you write or perform your music?
Yes,
Magnadur is now band and I like very much making cooperating with all musicians
and I have still my other bands where I can do all myself (Morbid children and
my solo project and Houruva)
8. You
also recently released the single “Gotham City” — a title that feels very
different from the Shakespearean themes. How do you balance such diverse
inspirations in your songwriting?
Yes, Gotham
city is older song and I liked the Legendary Stories from Gotham city villains
and superheroes on that one and they inspired me big time!
9. What
can fans expect from Magnadur for the rest of 2024? You mentioned the music is
getting heavier — can you give us a taste of what’s coming next?
Yes the new
album is far the most heaviest i have done and just by listening the whole
album all fans can hear that and i hope all metal heads all over globe like
it!!
