Single Review: KO.VALAINEN “BRNX”

Every metalhead who respects themselves has probably experienced a phase of exploring extreme, underground sounds that few people would dare to listen to. In my case, it was grindcore and noisecore, where the ugliness, chaos, and sheer sonic aggression became part of the attraction. KO.VALAINEN’s BRNX takes a different approach to noise, but it taps into that same desire to explore music beyond conventional boundaries.

Lasting eight minutes, BRNX transforms the urban environment of the Bronx, New York, into an experimental soundscape built from field recordings, synthesizers, feedback, and distorted textures. Rather than delivering recognizable melodies or traditional song structures, KO.VALAINEN creates an unpredictable sonic experience in which everyday noises become abstract rhythms, drones, and unsettling electronic layers.

What makes this project particularly interesting is its personal dimension. After spending six years in New York, the artist uses sound as a means of documenting memories and experiences, turning the city's constant movement into an unconventional musical language. The handmade electronic devices developed through the LEFA project add another layer of unpredictability to the composition.

BRNX certainly won't appeal to everyone, especially listeners seeking conventional musical pleasures. However, for adventurous ears drawn to experimental electronics, noise, and sound art, this is an intriguing journey into the chaotic soul of an urban landscape. Sometimes, music is about exploring rather than pleasing.
