Single Review : Karma Noir "Karma Noir"
After
reviewing their previous single, “This Is Her Time,” last May, we’re back with
Karma Noir’s latest release, a self-titled single that hits harder and leaves a
stronger impression. Although it runs a few seconds shorter than its
predecessor, the band wastes no time getting straight to the point.
A few
milliseconds in, and BAM! Right in your face! The vocals are as powerful and
shrill as ever, with some added growls to make things even nastier. Then the
drums kick in with an infectious rhythm that reminds me of a grindcore track I
can’t quite remember. Whatever the inspiration, it works brilliantly, making
this song more aggressive, energetic, and headbanging-friendly than “This Is
Her Time.”
After the first minute, things calm down slightly, introducing clean vocals and melodic passages that provide a brief change of atmosphere. But don’t get too comfortable, because the aggression returns around thirty seconds later, alternating with those melodic moments before the track slows down considerably towards the end. Even then, the heaviness remains intact, building towards a powerful finish.
Honestly, I
enjoyed this single much more than its predecessor. Personally, I think Karma
Noir should lean further into its raw, crushing, and downright destructive side
rather than putting too much emphasis on melody. But that’s just my opinion!
Either way, this is a solid, aggressive release that leaves me curious about
what comes next.
