In this interview, Slaughtercult’s Sean discusses the band’s brutal new album Devoured By Perversion, their influences, collaborations, explosive live shows, and upcoming international tour plans.
1. Devoured
By Perversion is your second full-length album. How do you feel Slaughtercult
has evolved since the release of Meat Head, both musically and as a band?
I think
we’ve evolved tremendously since Meat Head from our songwriting, recording
quality and performing, we’ve had nearly 3 years to continue getting more
comfortable and confident in creating a sound and style that isn’t just caveman
riffs. We’ve also got the sickest drummer ever now Matt Newling.
2. The
new album sounds deeply rooted in brutal death metal while incorporating
elements of grind and hardcore. What influences shaped the songwriting and
overall sound of Devoured By Perversion?
We
absolutely love Obscene Majesty by Devourment and the mission statement for our
album was, how close can we come to making something like that? If that’s even
possible. So much brutal death metal is rooted in grind and hardcore and all we
can do is try to shake heads or shake ass.
The album
features collaborations with Marvin Ruiz of Devourment and Elfi Davis of
Kraanium. How did these collaborations come together, and what was it like
having such respected names from the slam/brutal death metal scene contribute
to the record?
We were so honored
to have Elfi and Marvin on the album. For Kraanium as a part of their
Australian tour we asked if we could collaborate to help promote the tour as
their support. Elfi smashed out a take and it was perfect from the get go. We
saw Marvin was open to commission work and after sending Perverse to him and
him sending back his solo we were blown away.
3. The
song titles on Devoured By Perversion are certainly extreme and provocative.
What role do grotesque imagery, dark humor, and shock value play in
Slaughtercult's artistic identity?
Some music
is about feeling sad, melancholic, lustful, we want people to feel disgusted
and that’s what brutal death metal has always been about. This album in
particular we mostly focused on yucky human perversion (hence the name) wether
that’s depraved sexual acts or hedonistic fantasies. We’ve always loved double
entendres and tongue in cheek writing so finding that balance of brutality and
humor is important to us. Too much in one direction feels cringe.
Supporting
Nile was the first show we ever flew to perform and was one of the biggest
shows we had played at the time, it was an unforgettable night and we were
sticky taping our eyes open to watch George blast for 40 minutes straight from
the side stage, getting up at 3am to fly back home we felt like a real band.
5. Your
live performances have become an important part of Slaughtercult's reputation.
What do you want people to experience when they see the band perform Devoured
By Perversion live?
Tone and
sound is super important to us, if we can create an absolute wall of sound with
the three of us we’re gonna come off stage happy. We want people to feel the
chugs through their chest as well as their ears and want to go and run into
someone. For the people in the back, we’re looking to get some stank faces out
of them.
6. Australian
extreme metal has produced many distinctive bands and sounds. How do you see
Slaughtercult fitting into the current Australian death metal and underground
scene?
There’s a
really awesome wave of BDM rising in Australia, all our mates that we’re
playing with around the country all with a distinct sound. I think everyone is
forming this great scene that groups us together while still all having a
distinct sound and it’s going to be the fans that champion that.
We’re super
excited to be able to represent Australian metal overseas, especially in front
of some of the audiences we are lucky enough to play to. We’re excited to try
and turn some international heads over to Australia and check out the scene.
8. With
Devoured By Perversion arriving via Vicious Instinct Records, how has working
with the label helped the band take this new album to a wider audience?
Vicious
Instinct has been so dedicated to this album release; promoting the album,
creating the highest quality merch, vinyls and cd’s and overall being a legend.
We’re so grateful to have released the album through VI and it’s definitely
helped push us further around Australia and further into the rest of the world.
9. Finally,
looking beyond the release of Devoured By Perversion and the upcoming touring
schedule, what are your ambitions for Slaughtercult over the next few years?
We love what we are doing and are blown away by the opportunities and reception we’ve had, so we want to keep grinding away and making what we love for the people that support us. If we can continue on a path like the bands we love we are all going to feel really accomplished.
