Album Review: Daniel Bohn ”Gallant Guest”
Daniel Bohn
is no stranger to Lelahel Metal. We have been following his musical
journey since 2023, interviewing him twice—first in 2023 and again in 2024.
Following this review, we will also be publishing a brand-new interview with
him. Over the years, we have had the opportunity to premiere and review several
of his releases, including the excellent singles “Failure” in 2024 and “Bonfire”
in 2025. All of this has allowed us to witness the steady evolution of a truly
dedicated and creative artist.
One thing
becomes immediately clear when listening to Gallant Guest: this is a
deeply human record. In an era where technology increasingly shapes music
production, Daniel Bohn delivers an album that feels organic, passionate, and
authentic. You can hear the effort, the emotion, and the artistic vision behind
every note. This is not music assembled by algorithms; it is the work of a
musician fully invested in his craft.
Released
through Sliptrick Records, Gallant Guest marks an important
milestone in Bohn’s career as his first release under a label. The St.
Louis-based multi-instrumentalist once again takes complete control of the
creative process, handling guitars, bass, drums, piano, and vocals, while
Dorian Falconeri provides a polished mix and master that elevates the material
to a professional and powerful level.
Musically, Gallant Guest is a fascinating blend of progressive metal, death metal, black metal, and atmospheric passages. Fans of Between the Buried and Me, Opeth, Porcupine Tree, and Persefone will immediately recognize some familiar influences, yet Bohn manages to combine them into a sound that remains uniquely his own. The album is both technically impressive and emotionally engaging, balancing aggression with moments of introspection and melancholy.
As a
concept album, Gallant Guest continues the story introduced on Colors
of the Land. The narrative follows a god consumed by revenge who seeks to
destroy everything another god holds dear, ultimately bringing corruption and
devastation to the mortal world. It is a dark and ambitious tale, and Bohn
succeeds in translating its themes into music that feels cinematic and
immersive.
The album
opens strongly with “Runes,” a track that slowly builds tension before
exploding into a whirlwind of blackened riffs and relentless drumming. The
title track, “Gallant Guest,” showcases the album’s progressive nature,
combining intricate arrangements with crushing heaviness. “Bonfire,” one
of our favorite Daniel Bohn tracks in recent years, remains a standout thanks
to its infectious energy and memorable structure.
Perhaps the
most impressive aspect of the album is the noticeable growth in Bohn’s
songwriting. The arrangements feel more mature and cohesive than on previous
releases, with transitions flowing naturally between aggressive and atmospheric
sections. His vocal performance has also improved significantly. The harsh
vocals sound more confident and controlled, while the clean passages add depth
and emotional weight to the compositions.
Tracks such
as “Failure” demonstrate Bohn’s ability to create genuine emotional
impact. Beginning with a more restrained and melodic approach before gradually
building into powerful climaxes, the song perfectly captures the album’s themes
of loss, despair, and inner struggle. Meanwhile, the closing track “Verisimilitude”
provides a fitting conclusion, combining haunting melodies, dynamic
instrumentation, and a sense of finality that leaves a lasting impression.
Production-wise,
Gallant Guest is Daniel Bohn’s strongest work to date. Every instrument
is clearly defined, the heavier sections hit with tremendous force, and the
atmospheric moments retain their depth and texture. The mix allows the
complexity of the arrangements to shine without sacrificing impact.
With Gallant
Guest, Daniel Bohn delivers his most complete and accomplished album so
far. Dark, ambitious, emotionally charged, and technically impressive, it is a
record that rewards repeated listens and confirms his status as one of the most
creative independent artists in modern progressive metal. If this album is any
indication of where Daniel Bohn is heading next, the future looks very
promising indeed.
