Nearless opens up about solitude, heartbreak, and beauty, exploring how autumnal moods, atmospheric black metal, and post-rock dynamics shape the deeply personal emotions behind the EP Autumnal Ache creation process.
I write my
music solely alone and try to empty my head of all other music. I write what i
feel in that particular moment , when inspiration hits me I often write under
time constraints and in moments of reflection .
2. Your
music blends atmospheric black metal and post-rock. What inspired you to merge
these worlds, and how do you balance darkness with beauty?
My music
taste is really varied not just only black metal , I wanted to balance the
darkness with as much beauty as I could to reflect my everyday life.
3. The
new EP Autumnal Ache carries a strong seasonal identity. How does autumn
influence your songwriting compared to other times of the year?
I longed
for autumn to come after a relentlessly long summer ,seeking refuge of darkness
and beautiful autumn colours , It really inspired me to write these songs , i
wrote them with autumn colours in mind which is also reflected in the album art
. The birds were also singing in the trees outside my window everyday in the
evening like clock work , seeming to have a ‘ meeting ‘ so i recorded the
instrumental song ‘ the meeting ‘ on the record , to balance the darkness to
have a peaceful moment before the final track .
4. Can
you walk us through the creative process behind the track that best represents
the soul of this EP?
The
creative process is really hard , because i’m really critical of myself , and
other times the songs seemingly write themselves like they’re something outside
of myself .
5. Post-rock
often uses expansive dynamics. How important is contrast and space in shaping
Nearless’ emotional impact?
I Love
bands like ‘ This Will Destroy You ‘ And ‘ Hammock ‘ i love the atmosphere they
create and the heavy crushing dynamics and small delicate voicings that are
really touching , I often play my guitar really quietly so making something
sound heavy is quite a challenge but i think i achieved it in places .
6. Your
melodies feel “heartbreaking yet soaring.” Do you write the riffs first, or do
the emotional concepts come before the music?
Sometimes
i’ll have a lyric idea and build around it , but mostly it will come from
layering guitars or playing with chord shapes until find something I like .
7. Bedfordshire
isn’t widely known as a black metal hub. How does your local environment and
solitude feed into Nearless’ atmosphere?
I really
love the townn i’m in , i’ve only lived here a while and it has some real
hidden beauty , some of which i’m still finding , I get to admire some
beautiful sunsets from my window , and i’m always treated to the sight of some
wild animals or rare birds , It almost feels mystical in a way . I can walk in
the countryside and feel like I could be anywhere in the world .
8. What
are the biggest challenges and freedoms of producing, performing, and releasing
music entirely on your own?
The biggest challenges are recording and mixing and mastering because i really still have no idea but i’m improving all the time , everything is done by myself which is what i wanted Nearless to be , The biggest challenges is having nobody to share ideas with , they all have to come from myself , which in a way is also quite freeing as I can do whatever i want .
9. If
someone listens to Nearless for the first time today, what do you hope they
feel or take away from Autumnal Ache?
I hope they
can listen to it and it provides them with some peace and solitude , on long
walks , on the train etc , when they are alone and feel comforted and hopeful ,
I hope it inspires them to keep going , no matter what ,and find some strength
no matter what is going on in their life . I hope they can listen to it and
reflect and just take some time out.
10. What
direction do you see Nearless exploring next — deeper into atmosphere, heavier
aggression, or new influences outside the metal spectrum?
Nearless
will be back soon , with a full length this time and I have lots of surprises ,
I think i’m going to expand on everything and the whole album will be alot
deeper emotionally possibly have some faster songs , ! some , really far from
the metal spectrum but will still remain Nearless ‘ il be sure to put a lot of
myself into it , I hope people will relate to it a lot , i really look forward
to finishing it.
