Milwaukee’s Robot Witch return with Take Me To The Show — a bold, genre-blending full-length exploring rock energy and afterparty introspection. Frontman Matt Lubus reflects on inspiration, collaboration, and creative rebirth.
1. “Take
Me To The Show” feels like a major milestone. What inspired you to finally take
the leap into a full-length album after years of EPs?
Much of my previous recordings would be split into a side project bucket
"MFML" and our band "Robot Witch." I realized no one else
really cares about that so why not just release songs together as and list
things as "MFML Remix" etc? The second half of the album is
definitely more side project based.
By adding up all these songs it turns into an entire body of work.
2. The album is described as having two sides: one rock show, one
afterparty. How did you approach crafting such a dual-experience journey?
I didn't intend it to be that way. As I was starting to figure out how the
track listing should go, I realized there might be a concept here. I've always
loved concept records and was happy it turned out that way.
3. You cite influences like Nine Inch Nails, LCD Soundsystem, The Misfits,
and The Velvet Underground. How do those artists manifest in your sound?
As a band, we try to put together rock and electronic sounds. I'm a lover of
both genres almost evenly. After Adam joined the band and became the lead
guitarist, he really helped me rediscover my love for punk music. The Misfits
covers we did were a way to fill up our set lists years ago and I think the
band really enjoys playing those songs live.
4. Robot
Witch features a rotating cast of musicians. How has that impacted your sound
and songwriting over the years?
It started more rock based, I had grown tired of writing many of the songs in
my previous project. Song writing is not easy! As the band evolved and ppl
left, Adam stepped up as the lead guitarist. His songs are much more rooted in
punk ethos and I love singing them! He wrote the Vocal melody, lyrics and
guitar for "Sandbox toys" while writing guitar for "take me to
the show" and "Town". With 2 song writers we can have a more
diverse catalog and keep chugging out songs.
over time i
started to find a groove writing songs again (also digging through an archive
of old demos) I was surprised that I had written or co written 10 of the 11
songs on this new album. I suppose I'm done being lazy and have really started
writing again! It is also much more personal when singing/ writing your own
songs
5. You
have an album release show at Cactus Club on August 3rd. What can fans expect
from your live set that might differ from the recorded versions?
This event was canceled and was rescheduled.we already played the release so no
point in talking about it.
6. Lastly, what do you hope listeners feel or take away after experiencing
Take Me To The Show from start to finish?
It takes a lot of effort to write a full record instead of an EP or just
release a single. We're proud of the album and hope the ppl can walk into the
shoes of the songwriter, connect with the lyrics and can recall some great
nights out on the town!
