Single Review - The7thGatekeeper : “You Are My Sunshine”

After our September interview with The7thGatekeeper, the South Wales-based artist returns with a dark and daring reimagining of the classic “You Are My Sunshine.” Originally a timeless folk tune known for its sweet sentiment, The7thGatekeeper transforms it into something entirely different — a brooding, grunge-infused storm that highlights the unsettling darkness hidden within the song’s lyrics.

Clocking in at just three minutes, this version wastes no time making an impact. It opens with a beautifully haunting 30-second vocal-only intro — tender, vulnerable, and filled with emotion. Then the acoustic guitar joins in, wrapping around his voice with a delicate melancholy that draws you in completely. But at 1:16, everything changes. Out of nowhere, distorted guitars and pounding drums crash in, following the riff with surgical precision. It’s an unexpected and masterful twist — the kind of moment that makes you stop and say, “Wow.”

The track briefly returns to its acoustic calm before unleashing a final storm of distortion and raw emotion. The closing repetition of “You are my sunshine” over thunderous drums turns the familiar line into something haunting and cathartic — a cry from the shadows rather than a lullaby.

Recorded entirely in his home “chaos room studio,” The7thGatekeeper proves that creativity and emotion can outshine any studio polish. To be honest, it’s been a long time since a cover surprised us this much. This version of “You Are My Sunshine” deserves to become a modern dark classic.
