Single Review: 9 o’clock Nasty – “Sonic”
The Leicester-based punk provocateurs 9 o’clock Nasty
return with their new single “Sonic”, released on October 25, 2025 — and
true to form, it’s another sharp detonation of attitude and invention. Having
interviewed the band twice and previously reviewed their singles “Love in
the Circle” and “Game Fit”, we can safely say “Sonic” marks one of
their boldest artistic turns yet.
“Sonic” is stripped to the bone — raw, minimalist, and
pulsing with primal energy. The track opens with that relentless pulse kick,
setting a hypnotic rhythm that feels more like a heartbeat than a drumbeat. 9
o’clock Nasty peel back their usual layers of fuzz and chaos to reveal the
muscle beneath — a sound both skeletal and alive. There’s space here,
deliberate and tense, where silence becomes part of the rhythm. It’s a daring
move for a band known for their wild humor and explosive hooks, but it works
brilliantly.
Lyrically, “Sonic” feels like a rebellion against the
mundane — a cautionary tale of breaking away from conformity and embracing the
feral freedom of chaos. It’s visceral and poetic, like a punk parable.
As part of their forthcoming LP “Chaos,” “Sonic”
proves that 9 o’clock Nasty continue to evolve without losing their bite. Still
clever, still fearless, and still very much the sound of underground rebellion,
this track captures the raw nerve of a band that thrives on pushing every
boundary.
