Hedmark – “Deer Cross The River” (Single Review)
Norwegian
one-man project Hedmark, created by Gunnar Kjellsby, takes a bold step
into the world of atmospheric post-black metal with the single “Deer Cross
The River”. Lifted from the upcoming self-titled debut album, this track
perfectly encapsulates the wintry landscapes and eerie truths embedded in the
band’s stories of Hedmark county.
The song
opens with a saturated arpeggio, an unsettling yet captivating
introduction that sets the stage for what follows. As the verse kicks in, double
bass drumming and raw guitar layers intertwine with harsh black metal
vocals, instantly grounding the listener in familiar territory. Yet, Hedmark
refuses to remain within strict genre confines. The chorus arrives with a bizarre,
almost otherworldly atmosphere, where choral voices—performed by Melina
Oz, Embla Maria O’Cadiz Gustad, and Kjellsby himself—repeat the haunting
line “Deer Cross The River”. This creates a strange duality—equal parts
spiritual and unnerving.
The structure keeps the listener engaged: a second verse brings back the intensity, before the song drifts into a calming, atmospheric bridge, offering space to breathe. Soon after, the choirs re-emerge, weaving a sense of ritualistic unease, followed by a short interlude. Finally, the track closes by revisiting the chorus, driving its surreal, echoing mantra into the subconscious.
What makes
this single stand out is its refusal to rely solely on aggression. Instead,
Hedmark leans into atmosphere and discomfort, which in many ways lies at
the core of black metal’s purpose. The result is an immersive and unsettling
experience—a strong debut statement. Good job indeed. We are really looking
forward to October 9th, when the full self-titled album finally arrives.
