Single Review: New Laconia – “Journey to the Past”

Having already reviewed New Laconia’s two previous singles and even interviewed them in our magazine, we’ve come to recognize their adventurous spirit and unique approach to storytelling through sound. Their new single, “Journey to the Past”, feels like both a continuation of that narrative universe and a strikingly new chapter.

Compared to their earlier releases, this track is more melodic and more rock-oriented than metal, with a gentler, cinematic quality that brings out a different side of the band. The vocals are clear and emotionally charged, guiding the listener through the story of The Traveler with sincerity and warmth. In the first solo, we hear the guitarist’s signature melodic phrase — a recognizable motif he has woven into riffs before, marking his style as uniquely his own. Shortly after, dynamic drum fills add character and texture, driving the energy forward without overwhelming the atmosphere.

Midway, the song shifts gears and settles into a calm, almost ballad-like passage, creating a moment of reflection before gradually rebuilding. It keeps us entertained with its ebb and flow, never rushing, always unfolding with intention. Toward the end, another solo appears, this time more subdued, almost like a gentle farewell, before returning to the final verse and chorus to close the piece with resonance.

To be honest, “Journey to the Past” is more linear than some of New Laconia’s earlier, more experimental works — but it is also their calmest and most introspective song to date. A captivating, emotional portal indeed.
