The Word66 return with their bold new EP 37 Miracles, blending hard rock power with spiritual themes. We caught up with the band to discuss growth, purpose, and divine inspiration.
1. Congratulations on 37 Miracles! What inspired the theme and title of
this new record, and how does it reflect your growth since Rock & Roll
Preaching?
A fun fact
is that it is documented that Jesus performed a total of 37 Miracles. I
remember hearing that in a sermon and wanted to write a song about it. We
actually mention 15 of them on the track. I think we might be a smidgen heavier
from the last EP. I'm not really sure about the growth? I just write what I
write, if that makes sense?
2. Once
again, you worked with legendary bassist Danny Miranda. How did his presence
influence the sound and feel of the new EP?
Danny is an
amazing bassist with an incredible feel for music. His bass lines are so
beautiful and so natural, He knows exactly what the songs needs and breathes
life into every song.
3. How
would you describe the musical evolution of The Word66 between your last
release and 37 Miracles? Any new elements or risks you took creatively?
I think we
have a bit of a new sound especially with our new vocalist Carlos. Our previous
vocalist Brian, had more of a melodic type voice, which I feel, helped give us
a bit of a signature sound. With Brain's departure, bringing in Carlos was
perhaps a bit of a risk but I feel that it gives us more of a heavier sound
which I totally dig.
4. Your
debut single "On the Way to the Promise Land" charted impressively.
How did it feel seeing your music embraced so widely across the globe?
It was
pretty cool! Especially being what you would call a crossover band meaning that
we are accepted in the Christian and non-Christian world. To this day, we
probably get more play in the mainstream world, which is a beautiful thing
being able to spread a positive message to those who need to hear it the most.
5.
You've partnered with Paul Crosby, formerly of Saliva. What has this
collaboration meant for the band's visibility and future plans?
Paul is a
really good guy. We hired him in hopes of contacting the places that we are
unable to reach ourselves. Over his career he has made a ton of connections in
the music industry.
6. Your
lyrics aim to bring light into dark places. Is there a particular track on 37
Miracles that you feel carries a message people especially need to hear right
now?
I think all
of the tracks on the EP have a positive message that needs to be heard or
reinforced. Our latest track 'Tell Me,' is about breaking through strongholds
in your life and opening yourself up to listening to what you need to do in
your life, which is illustrated by the single artwork. Our next track, 'I'll Be
There,' is God telling you that He knows life isn't easy, but you are not alone
and he is there with you every step of the way.
7. The
balance between hard rock energy and gospel positivity is rare-how do you
manage to maintain that without compromising either side?
I think it
all comes back to my purpose and why I was chosen for this task. I believe that
the music and the lyrics that I write helps us to get our music played in the
Christian and non-Christian world, giving us the ability to send out a message
to the people that need to hear it. Rocking out while sending a positive
message is what we love to do.
8.
You've spoken about purpose in the past. How has your understanding of your
personal and musical purpose evolved over the last year?
Speaking of
such, the more I get to know the Lord, the more I realize that I am on the
right path writing praises, love songs, and addressing our everyday struggles.
There is so much to learn and I try my best to apply this knowledge to my
everyday life. I try to be the best person I can be but it's not always that
easy! I'm a work in progress! LOL.
9.
Looking ahead, what's next for The Word66? Any plans for a full-length album,
touring, or further collaborations on the horizon?
We are just
releasing our 2nd track from the new EP 37 Miracles, called 'Tell Me.' This
will be a 6 song EP and we are really excited to release the ones to follow.
The EP will be out later in the year. We would love to record a full LP
but unfortunately, the studio is not free and can get pretty expensive. LOL.
Everything is coming out of our pocket. Perhaps when we get the right record
offer, we can make that happen? We should also be out live shortly as well. We
recently signed with PCM Management and are excited to see what he and our
savior have in store for us.
