Album Review: Rainbow Warrior by Chantal
Chantal’s
second full-length album, Rainbow Warrior, is a triumphant declaration
of purpose and passion from one of South Africa’s most unique symphonic metal
voices. Blending cinematic orchestration, powerful vocals, and layered metal
arrangements, Chantal delivers a conceptually rich and emotionally resonant
record aimed at the misfits, the fighters, and those hungry for a better world.
Opening
with “Silver Linings,” the album immediately sets a tone of contrast—hope laced
with heaviness. The track begins softly with piano and ambient keys, gradually
building into a soaring ballad with melodic vocal lines that feel both intimate
and anthemic. It’s a solid introduction to the album’s themes of perseverance
and clarity in chaos.
The title
track, “Rainbow Warrior,” is a true centerpiece. Accompanied by a visually
stunning music video filled with waterfalls and rivers, it’s not just the sonic
heart of the album, but also its philosophical manifesto. Chantal’s voice
shines in the chorus, delivering a message of resilience and transformation
with cinematic flair.
Track three
pushes the boundaries even further. At over six minutes, it fuses symphonic
beauty with bursts of black metal vocals in the background, lending an
unexpected ferocity. This juxtaposition heightens the emotional weight and
makes it the most sonically daring track on the album.
“Canyon,”
with its lyric video set against vast desert landscapes and wildlife, continues
the journey with more melodic ease. “New Paradigm” follows, bringing back the
blackened vocal contrasts and adding forest-themed visuals that emphasize
Chantal’s connection to nature and the spiritual world.
“Pandora’s
Box” hits hard from the start with a catchy guitar riff, delivering one of the
most infectious choruses on the album. “Which Wolf Will You Feed” and “Never
Give Up” provide emotional ballast—songs of internal struggle and rising again.
The latter is especially effective, doubling as a hopeful anthem and a sonic
highlight with textured vocals and melodic solos.
The final
stretch includes “Boomerang” and “Wild Side,” both supported by video content
and showcasing a slightly different flavor—more introspective, more
experimental. “Wild Side,” in particular, hints at where Chantal might go next
creatively.
While Rainbow
Warrior doesn’t always stray far from its symphonic metal roots, and could
have benefitted from more risk-taking, it remains a passionate and beautifully
executed album. Chantal proves herself not just a vocalist of extraordinary
range, but a visionary artist unafraid to stand for what matters. A bold,
heartfelt release with room to evolve—and we’re eager to hear where she goes
next.
