New Laconia’s latest single “Fly or Die!” channels raw emotion and cinematic intensity, drawing inspiration from Fourth Wing to tell a soaring tale of courage, transformation, and survival.
1. “Fly
or Die!” is described as an anthem for those standing at the edge of the
unknown. What inspired the emotional journey and lyrical theme behind the
track?
“Fly or Die!” follows the heroine’s journey in Fourth Wing, with each verse capturing a key stage of her transformation. The first verse shows her fear entering the Riders Quadrant. The second highlights newfound strength and alliances. The third brings the final trials where everything’s at stake. It’s a song about facing death, defying expectations, and learning to soar.
2. The song features a powerful concept of choice – to rise or fall. Was
there a personal or symbolic moment that sparked this idea?
The concept came straight from Fourth Wing. That brutal choice - either mount
the dragon or die - perfectly captured the idea of rising or falling. It was
such a powerful metaphor that it shaped the entire emotional core of the song.
3.
Musically, “Fly or Die!” is your most dynamic and aggressive release yet. What
led to this creative shift in sound and intensity?
The shift came from the source material - Fourth Wing is intense, high-stakes,
and emotionally charged, so the music had to match that energy. We leaned into
heavier guitars, driving rhythms, and layered vocals to capture the adrenaline
and danger of Violet’s world. It’s the sound of survival - raw, urgent, and
unapologetically bold.
4. The
use of polyphony in three different octaves is a bold and unique production
choice. How did this idea come about, and what was the biggest challenge in
making it work?
The idea came from wanting to reflect Violet’s inner conflict - fear, courage, and determination - all happening at once. Using polyphony across three octaves let us layer those emotions sonically.
5. You mentioned that this song is about that pure adrenaline rush – like
standing on the edge of an abyss. How did you channel that feeling into the
composition and vocal performance?
To capture that adrenaline rush, we pushed everything to the edge - sharp
dynamics, sudden drops, and explosive choruses. I approached the vocals like a
freefall: holding nothing back, letting the emotion crack through when needed.
Every take was about staying in that high-stakes headspace, like I was standing
on that ledge with Violet, choosing to leap.
6. This
single marks a new stage in the development of the New Laconia universe. What
can you tell us about how the project’s narrative or sound is evolving?
“Fly or Die!” opens a more intense, emotionally charged chapter in the New Laconia universe. The sound is heavier, more cinematic - reflecting the high-stakes stories we’re now telling. Narratively, we’re diving deeper into individual character arcs pulled from sci-fi and fantasy worlds, weaving them into the bazaar’s larger mythos. It’s no longer just a place - it’s becoming a convergence point for epic, personal journeys.
7. Your past singles, “Stardust Bear Bazaar, Pt. 1” and “The Fates,” created
intricate stories inspired by science fiction and mythology. Where does “Fly or
Die!” fit within that creative cosmos?
“Fly or Die!” fits into the Stardust Bear Bazaar universe as one of the stories told by a guest who’s just arrived through a portal - in this case, Violet from Fourth Wing. While “Stardust Bear Bazaar, Pt. 1” sets the scene and “The Fates” dives into mythology, this track brings in fantasy-driven action and emotional urgency. It expands the cosmos by adding a raw, personal tale of survival, making the bazaar feel even more alive with voices from across time and genre.
8. There’s a strong visual and cinematic quality to your music. Do you
envision expanding New Laconia into other media like graphic novels, animation,
or video games?
Absolutely - from the beginning, New Laconia was imagined as more than just music. The stories, characters, and settings are built with visuals in mind. We’d love to expand into graphic novels or animation, where the Stardust Bear Bazaar and its many universes can fully come to life. Each song already feels like a scene from a larger saga, and exploring that through other media is a natural next step.
9. New Laconia seems to defy genre boundaries, blending heavy metal, rock,
jazz, and pop. How do you maintain cohesion while experimenting across such a
wide range?
For us, cohesion comes from emotion and storytelling, not genre. Each song starts with a narrative or feeling we want to express - and the style follows that. Whether it’s heavy metal or jazz-infused pop, it all serves the story. We use recurring motifs, textures, and vocal layers to tie everything together, so even as the sound shifts, it still feels unmistakably New Laconia.
10. Your music often balances between intellectual depth and mass appeal.
Who is the ideal listener for “Fly or Die!”, or is it truly for anyone ready to
take that leap?
“Fly or
Die!” is for anyone standing at a crossroads - whether you’re a fantasy fan, a
dreamer chasing something bigger, or someone facing a life-changing decision.
We write with depth, but never want the music to feel exclusive. If you’ve ever
felt fear and jumped anyway, this song is for you. It’s not about fitting a
mold — it’s about resonating with that universal moment of choosing to fly.
