EP Review – Anomic – Opacity (EP, 2024)

With Opacity, Dutch-Syrian powerhouse Anomic crashes onto the scene with a razor-sharp debut EP that injects fresh adrenaline into the veins of thrash and death metal. Founded in 2023 by guitarist/vocalist Raafat "Raaf" Atasi, joined by bassist/growler Fadi Massamiri and renowned session drummer Krzysztof Klingbein (ex-Belphegor, Vader), this Netherlands/Germany-based trio delivers a potent three-track assault.

Opening with the title track “Opacity,” Anomic sets the tone with a heavy intro before launching into ripping thrash riffs that blend technicality, melody, and relentless speed. “This Blood Is Mine” continues the barrage with razor-edged precision and a tight, genre-faithful production that highlights every snarl and blast beat. The EP closes with “On Deaf Ears,” featuring guest growls from Stefan Nordström, combining Swedish melodic death metal influences with old-school grit and aggression.

What sets Opacity apart is its seamless fusion of thrash and death metal, enriched by technical finesse and melodic flair. The production—handled expertly by Massamiri—is punchy and clean without losing raw edge. This debut is not just promising—it’s a statement. Anomic might just be the most exciting act in the New Wave of Old School Thrash/Death.

Bring on the full-length. You’ve got our attention.
