Single Review Matt C. White – Blood Divine
“Blood
Divine” is the second single from Brooklyn artist Matt C. White’s upcoming solo
album A Cosmic Year, and it’s a wild ride through fuzzed-out psych,
heavy stoner doom, and slinky funk grooves. Fully self-recorded, written, and
performed, the track reflects White’s experimental spirit and fearless
genre-hopping.
Opening with ominous wah-drenched guitar licks, the song quickly spirals into a rhythm-heavy, groove-laced storm. There’s a pulsing urgency beneath the haze—tribal drums and spacey synths collide with swampy blues riffs, evoking everyone from Santana to The Mars Volta. The vocals, almost chant-like, ride the wave with ritualistic intensity, reinforcing the ancient, almost mythic narrative about survival and the “blood divine.”
It’s a
confident, adventurous composition—psychedelic yet tight, funky yet heavy,
retro but unmistakably modern. White channels a cosmic vision, one rooted in
both Southern soul and the avant-garde, and the production has a gritty warmth
that complements the dense sonic layering.
If “Blood
Divine” is any indication, A Cosmic Year might be one of the most
stylistically fearless records of 2025. It’s eccentric, groovy, and brilliantly
executed—a bold statement from an artist pushing the boundaries of psych-rock. Essential
listening for fans of heavy, weird, and wonderful.
