The Total Sound Of The Undergound

Lelahel Metal

Born from the union of Orphée and Still Rising, Our Last Breath blends melodic metal and deathcore with passion, energy, and a DIY spirit. We spoke with them about their journey.

1. OLB was born from the merger of Orphée and Still Rising. How did that collaboration come about, and what inspired the fusion of melodic metal and deathcore?

Still rising was playing a music mainly influenced by metalcore when Orphee was more into melodic metal.

The merge of the 2 bands lead then to the specific sound that Our Last Breath is proposing.

The fusion came naturally as we already know each others (for a majority) and we had a common vision of music.

2. How did your musical backgrounds and experiences in the previous bands influence the songwriting and overall sound of OLB?

As mentioned before, we all have various influences and in addition nearly 20 years of music practice so we use this strength to make what we believe to be something original!

Our 2 Guitarists & Our Keyboard Player are very active in terms of composition but everybody is involved into the creation process.

3. Your debut EP was a long process, from composition to mastering. What were some of the biggest challenges you faced during its creation?

Lets say that the initial challenge was to find our way and our own identity, from music to visuals

The song writing part was surprisingly easier even if we decided to take our time to build something we will be proud of.

4. You recorded the drums at the Chenée Palace in Liège and handled mixing/mastering across France and Canada. How did the international production process shape the final sound of the EP?

We were seeking for a modern sound, powerful and even if we have knowledge in Recording / Mastering it would not be comparable to a professional work.

So this is the reasons we decided to let professionals manage this part of the process.

The recording / mixing phases were both successful collaboration where we learned a lot and with a final result above our expectations!

5. The band currently handles distribution and promotion independently. How has the DIY approach impacted your connection with fans and the music community?

As Independent, we start from scratch, and we have to build our network on our own.

It means lot of time dedicated to communication but clearly this is not where we are the best!

For the album distribution, there are now lot of websites that help small bands to distribute their music easily on all streaming platforms and it works fine !

6. What themes or stories are explored in the songs on your EP, and what message do you hope listeners take away from it?

We are not promoting truly engaged messages but the text are talking about our society, the feeling of loneliness people can have and the impact on mental health.

We also try to give positives messages reminding that whatever happened you are never alone and should never give up.

The new single, that is out now, is going on a new concept, more into fantasy.

7. Can you describe how the creative process works within the band? Who brings what to the table when it comes to writing music?

(Already answered before :))

8. You’ve mentioned wanting to play live shows to support the EP. What can audiences expect from an OLB performance, and what kind of atmosphere do you strive to create on stage?

We have played several live shows since the EP release and on stage we are full of energy!

Then if you come to one of our shows, expect movement in the pit!

9. You’re already working on a follow-up project for 2024. Can you share anything about the direction you’re heading in musically or thematically with the next release?

'Unleashed' our new single

is already out since end of 2024.

Musically, it is faster and more aggressive than our first EP even if it keeps and important part of melody and orchestration.

With this new Single, we are starting to build a more fictional thematic that could be the basis of the incoming album.

10. Looking ahead, what are your hopes for OLB in the next few years—both in terms of music and connecting with the metal scene in Belgium and beyond?

We target a new album for 2025/2026 and in the meantime, we want to share our music as much and as far as possible!

We put no limitations, and we check every opportunity as long as it is in accordance with our principles and agenda!

The project has an important meaning for all the 6 band's member and more than a musical project it has now become a second family.
