The Total Sound Of The Undergound

Lelahel Metal

Vancouver rock band THE THICK OF IT are set to release “Someone Else,” a gripping new single. Lead vocalist Garth Allen shares insights on the track, their sound, and future plans.

1. First off, congratulations on the upcoming release of "Someone Else" — how are you feeling about finally sharing this song with the world?
Really good, our main goal is to have our music be available because we work hard on writing and recording it.

2. "Someone Else" dives deep into emotional conflict and heartbreak. Was there a specific moment or inspiration that sparked the writing of this track?
Not specifically, this track is a fictional story, but I did try my best to describe the emotions as if I was in the same situation.

3. Compared to your previous single "FDA (Full Diamond Armour)," this new song leans more into a melodic and brooding vibe. Was this a conscious shift in sound during the Armoury Studios sessions?
There is never a concious shift or otherwise, we defiantly go where the music and songs take us. I do feel that we always “mature” bit in sound from one recording to another.

4. The dynamic range in "Someone Else" — from the dreamy verses to the crushing breakdown — is powerful. How did you approach structuring the song to keep that emotional intensity throughout?
The Drums and Bass info really set this song up, we made sure we kept the vibe it created throughout the song.

5. You’ve mentioned influences like Tool, Alice In Chains, and Chevelle. What aspects of their sound do you feel most connected to, and how do you make sure THE THICK OF IT stays uniquely its own thing?
I believe we all subconsciously draw from our influences. As far as staying unique we don’t really plan or think about it, we have played together for so long that we naturally keep our “core” song intact.

6. Garth, since forming THE THICK OF IT back in 2008 as a more introspective project, how do you feel your songwriting and themes have evolved over the years?
The music has defiantly gotten a little heavier and the themes are sometimes darker lyrically

7. Armoury Studios is iconic in Vancouver. What was it like recording there, and did the environment influence the vibe or energy of "Someone Else" in any way?
Members of this band have recorded at the Armory at different times, every time is amazing. The environment is positive and easy going.

8. How do the rest of the band — Alex, Ryan, and Jeff — shape the final sound of your songs once you bring in your initial ideas?
Well, lately Alex as brought in some of the ideas but essentially if I have a song or idea everyone just starts putting the pieces together with me, it is very collaborative

9. THE THICK OF IT has built a loyal following through steady single releases rather than the traditional album cycle. How has this approach helped you grow creatively and connect with your listeners?
Honestly I am not sure, some say singles are the way to go, some say EP’s now. I think it allows us to promote one single at a time thus the fans and new listeners can focus on that particular song.

10. "Someone Else" feels tailor-made for playlists like Breaking Hard Rock and Heavy Hitters. How important are streaming platforms and curated playlists for a modern rock band like yourselves?
It is important but very competitive which makes things tough. But it is the way of the world so you have to be on board.

11. What can fans expect next after "Someone Else"? Is there more music from the 2024 sessions at Armoury Studios still waiting to be unleashed?
We recorded drums and bass for 5 songs at the Armory Session, then did guitars for all songs at The Spot Studios in Vancouver. Vocals with our friend Rob Wade at his Studio in Parksville, BC and then “The Wizard” Kris Seigers is mixing them. So “Someone Else” is the second single from that batch. We will release another song in a few months time. The next single will be different from “ Someone Else” and we are exited to get it out as well as the rest of the batch. We are currently writing and demoing more songs.

12. Last one: Looking ahead, what’s your biggest dream for THE THICK OF IT in 2025 and beyond?
To get our music exposed, like what’s happening right now with this interview. I know we have quality music and everyone in this band has been around for awhile. We all have experienced our own successes, toured, some of us have been on record labels, so with that being said we really just want to oppurtunities for people to hear our music.
Thank you from all of us at THE THICK OF IT.
