The Total Sound Of The Undergound

Lelahel Metal

With Outer Space, I, Captain delivers a cosmic concept album blending rock, funk, blues, and punk. We caught up with the one-man band to explore the journey behind the sound.

1. Congratulations on the release The “Outer Space” album! How does it feel to finally share your second full-length album with the world?

First off, thank you for having me. The “Outer Space” album was fun to do and a long time coming. It was a labor of love because some of the songs are older but were never recorded. It was a concept idea years ago that never came to pass. When the opportunity finally came to record it, I couldn’t pass it up. Having it released is a blessing!

2. Your music blends Rock, Funk, Blues, and Punk—how did you arrive at this eclectic mix, and how does it evolve on Endless Miles compared to your previous work?

I think it’s just the type of styles that I tend to play. All of the I, Captain stuff is basically those elements however, this project was a concept idea. The space theme added a bit of a variance from the previous album.

3. You describe the album as a concept record inspired by 70’s-style albums and DIY demos. Can you talk about how those influences shaped the overall sound and storytelling?

Well, I love old vinyl. I love the sound and texture that it gave music. I tend to have a low-fi sound as it is so, my recordings come off that way in general. When I was young and first started playing music there were bands around making demos and I always loved the DIY sound. It wasn’t manufactured or overproduced in any way. It had a purer sound. I try to keep an element of that in my stuff.

4. The album takes listeners on an "outer space journey" through the stories of everyday people. What sparked that cosmic narrative, and how does it connect with real-life themes?

The album tells stories of everyday people living their lives as we do here on earth, just in space. There isn’t anything different in that regard. I’m a big Star Wars fan so I guess the Outer Space concept sparked from that. It’s about people who struggle, have success, make good and bad choices and ponder their own existence as we all tend to do.

5. Was there a particular track that served as the anchor or starting point for the rest of the album’s concept? If so, which one and why?

Flight Tips is the first track on the album and was the first song written. I’d say it led the way for the rest. Although, I think a few different songs might be the anchor. It’s hard to pick one.

6. The album title Endless Miles suggests movement or travel—does it refer more to a literal space voyage or an emotional/personal one?

Well, the album is called “Outer Space”. Endless Miles is just a featured track which is about a simulation that continues on and on.

7. How did you approach the production of this album? Did you keep the DIY spirit alive, or did you explore new studio methods?

Yes, the DIY spirit is always present. I learn new techniques all the time and try to incorporate them into the recordings as well. I built a studio in my home and it’s a definite learning experience.

8. What do you hope listeners will feel or take away after experiencing the album from start to finish?

My hope is that listeners just enjoy the ride. I release the music in a rather organic way. I don’t do a lot of promotion for it other than these small interviews. The album, in my opinion, is fun and full of variety. Hopefully, some folks will check it out.

9. Are there any musical easter eggs or hidden themes in the album that fans should listen for?

Easter eggs? Not really. It’s pretty straight forward.

10. You’ve made the album available on all major platforms—do you have any special plans for live shows or a release party to support Endless Miles?

Well again, the album is called “Outer Space” and it was released in January 2025. No live shows scheduled yet but hoping soon.

11. How has the band grown since your debut full-length release, and what lessons carried over into this new project?

I’m a one-man band. I play and record all the instruments. I’m growing all the time as a musician and engineer. I think each project is better than the last. Of course, it’s a matter of opinion lol.

12. Finally, if Endless Miles were a journey through space, where would you say I, Captain is headed next? What’s on the horizon after this release?"

A new album is set for next year. The finishing touches are being applied. Hopefully it will give listeners yet another layer of I, Cap

I, Captain
