Single Review: “Firmament: Redux” – Apeiron Bound
Progressive metal outfit Apeiron Bound return with a
powerful reimagining of their 2022 track, “Firmament,” now reshaped into the
sprawling and ambitious “Firmament: Redux.” Clocking in at over seven minutes,
it’s been a while since I’ve sat down to absorb a song of such length—but the
intro, with its clean vocals and atmospheric keys, instantly suggested
something uncommon and worth the time.
The song begins gently but soon transitions into a mix of soaring clean vocals, guttural growls, and distorted guitar work. The raw edge of the production might not appeal to fans of overly polished prog, but it adds a certain authenticity that works in the context of their sound. What truly stands out is the vocal layering: the operatic power of Keith “Tank” McDowell, the visceral shrieks, and the melodic clean lines all intertwine in a way that feels fresh and experimental.
Guitar work by Cody Letts is intricate and
expressive—melodic licks, technical flourishes, and tasteful arpeggios enhance
the track’s progressive identity. The mid-section instrumental bridge is
especially engaging, offering a spacey, melodic pause that reinforces the
band’s cosmic and philosophical themes.
There’s a rare cohesion here—every musician pulls their weight, and the result is a bold, intelligent composition that refuses to follow the usual formula. “Firmament: Redux” is prog-metal with a capital “P”: brutal yet melodic, cerebral yet emotive. Apeiron Bound are clearly charting their own path, and it's a thrilling one to follow.
